CRITICAL THINKING

Subj: Critical Thinking
Task 4: Packaging

In this task we are required to research about packaging and make report about it in power point. This the link of the power point. After making the research then we are required to find package and find out what is wrong in the packaging and make new packaging after choosing the package that we want to redesign.

 Critical Thinking: Packaging pp.

TITLE: PACKAGING DESIGN PROPOSAL

OBJECTIVE OF PROPOSAL: We are decided to make new packaging of the package of the soap package that you have now. We try to redesign the package to be reusable and more towards green.

USE OF THE DESIGN PROPOSAL/AIM: The design is to boost people towards green and reusable. The design also helping people to think about the paper wasting they done before by throwing away the package after taking the content. So I hope this design will change the way people thinking about eco product.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

1. Using the glue to sticks the packaging together.

2. The wastage of paper that we use to made the packaging.

THE HIGHLIGHT:

1. We want to change the usage of glue in sticking the paper together by making slot to connected the package.

2. We want to make the package by using recycle paper to lower the cost and the wastage of paper been made.

RATIONALE: This product is too made people aware of the wastage of the paper that use by making the packaging. This product also recycle and can reuse to put other thing and this will help people think eco and helping to reduce the deforestation.

DIGITAL DESIGN

DIGITAL DESIGN PROPOSAL
TITLE: INSTALLATION ART OF DEFORESTATION PROPOSAL

OBJECTIVE:
      i.        We show the texture of the infertility soil after the deforestation on projector.
ii.        We will use papers, newspaper or material that be made using tree to show the wastage of paper that human use and this lead to the active deforestation.
iii.        Using made tree bark to show the deforestation that still happen nowadays and still happen in future if there no prevention and the imbalance of the world.

AIM: This project is to create awareness and let people think about the impact of deforestation    toward the world and preserving it for the next generation.

CONCEPT: Our concept is to show the impact/effect of the deforestation that happen now and toward the future and also happen if this kind of thing cannot be stopped. Our concept also is to let think or reflect about they done for the skyscraper building and ignoring the land they stand now.

MATERIALS: Newspapers, 2 rolls of fishing rope, recycle/unused papers, a bunch of chopsticks, a bunch of toothpicks, 1 bottle of white paint, 2 bottles of glue and wood filler, tree branch, tree age ring texture and tree bark texture.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF DEFORESTATION:
      i.       1. One of the disadvantages of the deforestation is global warming phenomena that lead towards of the increase in sea level and climate change this is because of the increasing temperature from the co2 emission.

      i.         2.  Deforestation also lead to the decrease of oxygen level and the increasing of carbon dioxide because the there are no tree to filter the carbon dioxide and changing it into oxygen.

      i.      3.  Deforestation also lead to the destruction of the wildlife habitat and this will lead to the extinctions, this will causing havoc in the biological food chain and the imbalance of the ecosystem.

      i.             4.  Deforestation also the cause of the soil erosion, without the tree, the soil will lose the fertility because the lack of nutrient and this cause of the desertification.

      i.        5. Deforestation also causing the flood or landslides, because on the heavy rain there no barrier between the rain and the soil because tree is the barrier between rain and land and slowing the rain flow.
      i.       6. Deforestation also the major cause of the greenhouse effect. It’s happen because of the emission of the co2 and it trapped the radiation from the sun and increasing the temperature and depletion of the ozone layer.

RATIONAL: We use the white paint for the tree bark because it is the base paint for the concrete building and this show that the modern things nowadays come from a single tree. We also put the tree stump on the wall to show the people now look up for the modernist for example skyscrapers and forgetting the land they stand on and everything that come from the land.

20TH CENTURY DESIGN

For task 2, we learn about Dadaism concept, where we know it is a art movement that happen after the World War 1, where artists decided to protest the government and rejected the reason and logic. Dadaism also a change in artists where they start to change their artwork from paint and brush media to other media such as collage, photo montage, assemblage and ready made thing.

For me, Dadaism is controversy way of the young artist in that time to directly or abstractly hating government because of the war they created.

The famous artist of Dadaism that I like is Marcel Duchamp. His artwork The Fountains that using urinal place or toilet resemble the project that Aisyah and I doing for Dadaism project. We using 6 things that we collect and put in the box and exchange it around the group, so my group boxes with Jeffry group, where Aisyah and me get, bracelet, seashell, chains, 50 cents coin, oil container that been cut half, bulb, wire, batteries, plastic cup, polystyrene cup, tissue roll, masking tape, and soap.

Pic 1: Duchamp_Fountain retrieved at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Duchamp_Fountaine.jpg

So using this as references, we creating a sketches of idea on issue that we want to give awareness that happen know. Aisyah and I try to use this thing in the boxes to create topic of the awareness of transgender.  This idea of creating this topic is because of the another side of Marcel Duchamp, that is known as Rrose Selavy.

File:RroseSelavy.jpg

Pic 2:  Rrose Selavy the alter ego of DADA famed artist Marcel Duchamp taken by Man Ray in 1921 retrieved at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RroseSelavy.jpg

REFLECTION

In learning Dadaism, I learn about the way artist try to change the way of making art and using art as a provocation or something that create scandalous by the way people change because of war that happen and using something new that did not use brush and painting. Mostly, I think Dadaism is something controversy by making direct and abstract approach.

20TH CENTURY DESIGN

Sub: 20th Century Design
Task: Post Modernism

In this art movement, we learn about an art that doesn't give meaning just making something that look differently from reality. PM also is an art that influental all creative industries including architecture.

Modernism is a way  looking out for world, or an idea that developing a new way understanding or developing an Utopia or ideal world by creating something that definitely 360 degree differently from reality.

Artist made it because it is fun and 'POP' culture by creating something that already popular. For an example like a sculpture of Micheal Jackson by Jeff Koons or picture of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol.

Pic 1: Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol retrieve from http;//artistme.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/marilyn.jpg.

Pic 2: Micheal Jackson and Bubbles by Jeff Koons retrieve from www.creativeboysclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/koons-2.jpg

The usage of PM is as Language of Advertisement such in television, newspaper, politician and much more. PM is also simulation about reality for an example Matrix film that the world they live is created by computer program and the reality is the way round.

Pic 3: Matrix Film Poster retrieve from  http://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/stltoday.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/2/80/280bade4-c0b3-5b7e-a2f5-919b80c4e899/515e1cdc57f19.preview-699.jpg

In PM we understand the world with images but the reality of the images is what we are feeling right now. PM is a work of pastiches. Pastiches is a work of visual art, literature or music that imitates the style or character of the work of one more other artist.

PM also an art that involves reality and simulacrum that you see doesn't mean it exist or the thing that you look it is not the same of the reality.

REFLECTION

In learning PM, I conclude that this art movement is something that weird and it sometimes doesn't bring any meaning.

DESIGN STUDIO_CONCEPTUALIZATION

Subj: Task 3: Design process

In this task, we work continuously from this task to another task to created last thing from the object that we choose. So I work with hair roller to create form, so from a sets of hair roller, I connected each of the hair rollers to make form. It sort of like Lego but I need to cut some to make it more stable and created it again.

Then, after creating the form, we make it as a functional thing. First, I want to create pencil holder by connecting the hair roller with chopstick and tied it with string. Then, when I at home, when I look for the space of drying clothes, I try to create the a clothes stopper by make a hole in each segments and connected it with string but I face the problem in the space between the clothes that help it to dry.

Then I change the idea, where I put 1 cloth in one hair roller. So the way I want to is to make the clothes stopper to be good in spaces.

METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

MID POINT REVIEW

From this module, I learn about the important of doing research. There are many type of research methodologies that we can use in doing research about artwork that we thing that show the study well. When, I doing about research on topic that we like in graphic design, I choose about fashion topic, then I found books about fashion such as WORLD MOST INFLUENTAL FASHION DESIGNER by Noel Palomo-Lovinski, FASHION-A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION by Rebecca Arnold and OLD CLOTHES,NEW LOOK: SECOND-HAND FASHION by Alexandra Palmer and Hazel Clark. They talk about fashion in variety way but mostly fashion is about what fashion is and the history of fashion and concept that designer from generation to generation.

In this module, I also learn about the important of an evidence that I should have when doing research about something that I want. If we need to take word or talk the author quotes, we need to learn a good way to make citation about the quotes that we want. We also learn how we use the quotes in our references in our artwork.

When we doing a group work, we usually learning from each other where we give comment to each other. This we do when doing presentation in about reasarch methodologies.

20TH CENTURY DESIGN

CONCEPTUALISM
Conceptualism is an idea. (Generally it taken to be an idea or reason how the work to be/ trigger the mind for the artwork. Concept may be relay to something that may or not may related to the thing in past to developed the future. Concept and object bring a different way of understanding. Concept can be something that functional or something that can be aesthetics and object is mostly about the function and the way to use.
For the report, I had been doing this project in Design Studio-Conceptualization of form. First, I use the hair roller as Lego. First concept is playing around the hair roller to create form from connecting the hair roller around. Then, we were asked to create from not functional form to functional form, so I created a clothes stopper. This idea trigger because of the limited space of drying clothes in my house and also how to stop the clothes bunch with others clothes. So I use the hair roller by connecting them with string.
If I decided to develop this prototype, 2 concepts that I should think of is about the ecology and design problem space.
For ecology, I need to change the materials that I use because plastic need longer time to dispose and I should think of something that could help with the problem that happen. First, we can use recycle hair roller that already break or we can use another type of material. For me, I would like to use rattan or bamboo because of my culture. For the string, I could choose a biodegradable material or dye the string with the natural pigment that can be found in plants or flowers. This is because, the string that I use is using chemical to bleach to make it white or I can use rattan rope to connect each bamboo roller to create the clothes stopper.

About the design problem, is what measurement that I should have. “Should I make it too long or comfortable with the user or should I use hook to connect it to the wall or I should nail it permanently there?” Using this question, I need to make research about furniture design and famous artist that has a good design in this field of study or look about rattan furniture or artist that creating something from nature, for an example there are designer that created a bicycle from bamboo.

20TH CENTURY DESIGN

In 20th Century Design, the first group project is about the applying and the usage of Cubism. Cubism is an art movement that created in 20th century. This movement is happen of the idea of paint everything in any perspectives. It either can be explore in multiple perspectives view or single point view.

Picture 1:
This is a example of Cubism Artwork, Nude Descending Staircase by Marcel Duchamp.

Then we are given task to create a short film that we learn from a movie, TIMECODE by Mike Figgis where he experiment the cubism in his film. So we decided to discuss about objects that we can see in many perspectives and single perspectives. In the end we decided to use laptop as our main point. From this point, our group make a brain storming of the different way of laptop usage whether in physical or conceptual/meaning.

Picture 2:
Our Brain storming of laptop
After the brain storming, we divided the usage of laptop in public and private, for the example is like the brand and Instagram can be look as a public view where everyone can look and E-mail and the usage it in office, school, college/university can be look as private. From this brain storming, we decided to use Instagram as our project, where we put picture that we put without editing where we can conclude from the word Insta/Instant that bring meaning of very short time and Instragram is the portmanteau of instant camera and telegram.

Picture 3:
The Topic of Instagram that we decided.

Then, we split the topic that we decided to do in the Instagram. We decided 6 topics of Travel, Sport, Transport, Food and Illness around us especially in Mantin. Then we make a lucky draw, to decided who take pictures about the topic. Mine is about transport in Mantin, because of my phone cannot support to do the video, so I take pictures only and post it in Instagram.

Task: Task 1: Create a Movie Poster

In this task, we need to pick one movie and create a poster, 12x18'' (vertical) complete with tag line, photo of actors and etc. We also can use the interesting plots/iconic character/symbolism/metaphor to identical the movie.

So I pick 'MALEFICENT' the new movies created by DISNEY, starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Stauton, Sharlto Copley, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

This story is based from SLEEPING BEAUTY by portraying the antagonist character Maleficent. Maleficent is a strong and powerful fairy that leave in magical forest names Moors near the human kingdom. When she was a young girl, she fall in love with human, Stefan. After long time didn't see each other, Stefan betray her love to fulfill his ambitions to be king by cutting Maleficent wings after drugged her. Devastated, she crowned herself to be Queen of Moors with her companion Diaval, a black crow that can change to whatever shape she want.

Then Diaval inform her that King Stefan is hosting a party to christening her daughter, Princess Aurora and Maleficent crash into the party by cursing her that on her 17th birthday, she will prick her finger with spinning wheel and fall death like sleep but she offer a caveat after the king beg her, that the curse can be broken by true love kiss. The king afraid with Maleficent vengeance sent Aurora to live with three fairy.

Then, Maleficent taking care of the princess because of the negligence fairy, and Aurora call her Fairy Godmother.

Picture 1: The Original Poster

Then, I create new poster that minimal the plot using a symbol of spinning needle and a hand on the upper side with blood.

Picture 2: The poster that I created

The head of spinning needle resemble the whole of spinning wheel and the hand resemble the princess of that been curse and the blood resembles the she prick her hand on the spinning wheel.

CRITICAL THINKING

Subj: Critical Thinking
Task: Task 1: Think Hard

In this task we are inform to learn about anatomy of alphabet and create by using A2 size of paper or card without any mark making (pen, pencil, paints and etc). We only allowed to die-cut, cut or fold to create full set of alphabets. Experiment using light, shadow or other color paper/card.

For this task I been experimenting using materials and shape that would help me to create the final projects about this task. For this task, I also need to find a word that resemble me and create the word in A2 size paper. After choosing word ADAPT, I try to create many example of alphabet in different shape and using different materials.

ADAPT : To adjust to new condition or change to become comfortable or try to fit in with the new environment.

ADAPT : Resembles me much, where I come from different environment and easily fit in or be comfortable with new environment.

First I try to using cut and fold but it turn out to be messy and unorganized. I try it in color paper. Then I try by using a symbol type of alphabet by using a rectangle shape but it look strange.

Picture 1: Cut and Fold

Picture 2 : Using a different shape

Second I try to cut it using triangle shape but didn't die cut it and fold to make it like 3D but I think it wasting a time. I make the small triangle in a many shape ruler and a cutter using different materials this time that is plastic cover.

Picture 3: Using triangle shape and different material

Lastly, I create a word using triangle shape. People usually using triangle to create a symbol but never a words or sentences. So I try using the triangle to creating the word using cut technique after seeing a UP symbol in the boxes. it turn out to be this.

Picture 4: Using a Triangle to creating a word.

But I face a problem in spacing and  the adjustment between the words and the paper size. Then, tutor help to create the ADAPT word using the correct spacing and the adjustment. Then after it finish, I decorate it with water color using spatter technique with different colors in each alphabets and stroke the color at the edge of the alphabets.

Picture 5: The Final Project and Idea Development That I choose.

OVERVIEW

Why I create this word using triangle shape? I always see people using triangle in symbolizing the direction like UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT and etc but people never use triangle to create a word. So I use this shape to create the word ADAPT, to try to adapting it in my chosen word. That why this shape and symbol is my references in solving this task.

METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

Subj: Method of investigation
Task 1: Method of Investigation Peer Reviews

Yesterday we doing presentation about Method of Investigation. This is about the peer reviews in our presentation yesterday that I get.

1. Satish = Research Methodolgy and Quanti/Quali
2. Budu = Ethnography and literature Review
3. Alexis/Me = Formative/Summative Research and Observational Research
4. Jeffry = Demographic
5. Hatmi = Psycho graphic
6. Aisyah = Primary/Secondary Research and Visual Anthropology

In Research Methodology and Quantity/Quality Research , I understand that research methodology is important in people life especially in field that need a references. Research methodology is a process of collecting information and data for purpose of making business decision. The methodology may include in publication, interview, survey and etc.

In Quality and Quantity is something that use in researching building proportion and something that countable and not countable but as a designer we always use non countable method in doing research.

For Ethnography and Literature review is, Ethnography is a research that need in observation and interacting with the people in that place. as a example, how to go green, we need to travel to know what other countries do to dispose their rubbish.

In Literature Reviews, is we research what other people has research and take it as a reference. For an example, if we decided a research about Malaysia, so we need to read every book that has research about Malaysia.

Formative and Summative research is a main research method. Formative is something that countable and summative is something that not countable. The method that in formative research is literature Review, Visual Anthropology, Surveys and Questionnaires, Demographic and etc. Method that in Summative Research is Observation, Web analytic, Interviews and etc.

Observational research is a research that conduct by observing a certain behavior in the subject without influencing the by interacting. observation can be conduct by going out and observe the subject from far or by an artificial lab but it has a disadvantage especially when using hidden camera that interrupt with subject personal life.

Demographic is a research that conduct by observing the product that they made according to gender, age, income, size, social class and etc.

Psycho graphic is research that conduct by observing personalities, opinions, attitudes, interest and etc. It's different from demographic research.

For the last peer reviews is about primary and Secondary Research. Primary research is something that we conduct as our original research and sources without other people influences. Secondary Research is a research that conduct after primary research by referencing other research about the same subject.

Visual Anthropology is a research about a study of human aspect and behavior that will be keep in picture, video and film.

This is my power point for the method of investigation task.

Task 1: Anatomy of Typography

Yesterday we are learning about ANATOMY OF TYPOGRAPHY in group work by brain storming. This is what we get.

Anatomy of Typography is a study of structure of typeface or describing graphic elements that make up printed letters in typeface. Origin of typography is from Greek root from the words TYPOS= Impressions and GRAPHIA= Writing Anatomy of Typography is also about the learning about the structure of typeface such as ear, hand, arm and shoulder. Each part of this structure in typo is important in each letters just like the human body structure.

There are many types of anatomy of typography.
i. Counter
ii. Diacritics
iii. Glyph
iv. Initial
v. Kerning
vi. Letter-Spacing
vii. Ligature
viii. Subscript and Superscript
x. Swash
xi. Text Figures
xii. Titles

The elements in anatomy :
I. MEASUREMENT :
    i. mean line/x-height
   ii. cap line
  iii. ascent line
  iv. descent line
   v. bare line

II. PART: Consist 9 basis element : Ascender, Descender, Serif, San-Serif, Spur, Stem, Crossbar, Counter and Ligature.

Anatomy of Typography also has character such as Bold, Italic, Underline  and etc.

Typography also contain the readability and legibility. Readability is a primary concern of the typographer and information designer. Legibility is primary the concern of the typeface designer, to ensure that each character or glyph is distinguishable from other characters in font.

Task 1: Research Terminologies

1: Formative Research.
Meaning: Formative is something that we cannot count such as picture or visual. That mean formative research is the basis for developing effective strategies and implementing design. It is a research that focus on details of content or performance. It is a contrast with summative research.

2: Summative Research
Meaning: Summative is something that we can count such as web analytic, data count and etc. Summative research is evaluation technique in instructional design. It also use to identify any areas of weakness. Method that been use in summative research is
  i. Questionnaires
 ii. Surveys
iii. Interviews
iv. Observations
 v. Testing
vi. Project

3. Observational Research
Meaning: Observational research is a method from summative research that conduct by writing a data after conducting a test or observational data. For example, a researcher conduct a test in logo design.
