3D Modelling for Object and Environment

3D Modelling for Object and Environment

Transportation

In this task we were told to create a transportation for animation. For the starter, I sketch the model of the car that I want. I just use the side view and then I ask my friend, Tomie to help me created it in Maya. I couldn't show it in this blog post because of my laptop crash on doing this progress.

3D Modelling Principle

These modelling principle are fundamental standards of 3D artists need to think before they start modelling something:
  • Realism
  • Detail
  • Functionality
  • Scale and Proportion
  • Appeal
  • Volume
  • Exaggeration
  • Weight

Introduction to Maya

Image 1: Logo of Maya

Maya is a powerful 3D modelling, animation, effects and rendering solution that been used in everything to feature films. We learn about how to use Maya in this module to created a 3D model. It is an interesting software to explore but sometimes it need big capacity of internal to save and to open the software.

Maya Interface

My Argument

Topic: How the Designer change the Perceptions of Children using Packaging.

Why I choose this topic as argument? I choose it because I want the children to eat healthy food and no just attracted to the colorful junk food. It is because, nowadays the population of the obesity in children and adolescent is increasing rapidly and it worries everyone out there. It also the increase the production and consumption of unhealthy food in children especially in Malaysia.

What the cause of this phenomenal acts in children? One cause that we already know is how attractive the junk food compare to the healthy food especially in colors and design.

Below is the image of the comparison between junk food and healthy food design:

Image 1: The color of junk food package taken at http://www.abc.net.au/news/image/377604-3x2-940x627.jpg

Image 2: The design of the sweet cereal taken at http://idsgn.org/images/business-cards-from-cereal-boxes/cereal_boxes.jpg

So, we can see the different of junk food and healthy food. As we know children trend to attract to bright thing and they favorite comic, cartoon or story book characters. This is where the problem start especially in manufacture. The manufacture would like to continue their business and if the product they produce rapidly consume by the consumer and this also help to increase their selling.

There is one cause that people doesn't realize especially the parent, it known as "Pester power" or the kid nag their parent to buy the thing that they want.

The Argument Introduction

An argument is the stand point or view of the Author. In academic, argument is form of written text but in art practitioners, this could be in form both of written and practice based work. To develop an argument the author must have a debatable claim.

Researching the Argument

To support your argument you conduct research. There are 2 types of research:

  • Primary research
  • Secondary research
Both will use many sources of evidence. Yours sources must be credible. To ensure their credibility ask yourself the following questions:
  • who is the author ?
  • how recent is the source ?
  • what type of sources does your audience value ?
Be careful when evaluate internet sources.

Organising the Argument

Use the Toulmin Method as your formula to organising your argument. The basic format for Toulmin Method is as follow:
  • Claim: The overall thesis the writer will argue for.
  • Data: Evidence gathered for support the claim
  • Warrant(Bridge): Explanation of why or how the data supports the claim, the underlying assumption that connect to your claim.
  • Backing(Foundation): Additional logic or reasoning that may be necessary to support the warrant.
  • Counterclaim: A claim that negates or disagrees with the thesis/claim.
  • Rebuttal: Evidence that negates or disagrees with the counterclaim.

Introduction towards the Contemporary Design Issues.

In Contemporary Design Issues, there would be rhetoric. Rhetoric is any communication used to modify the perspective of others. It is divided by 2:

1. Author: is anyone creates communication.
2. Audience: is anyone who receives communication from Author.

Author has 2 purposes for employing a rhetorical communication. These are informative and persuasive. Informative cover such thing as:
  • to inform
  • to describe
  • to define
  • to review and etc
Persuasive covers such thing as:
  • to persuade
  • to convince
  • to influence
  • to argue and etc
Audience also has 2 purpose in receiving communication. These are passive and active purpose. Passive covers such thing as:
  • to receive notice
  • to feel reassured
  • to feel sense of unity
  • to be entertained
  • to enjoy and etc
Active covers such thing as:
  • to examine
  • to quantify

Drawing Process (Part 2)

On this second visit to SUHU Art Space. We continued on the talk about drawing process and the tutorial of drawing realism. He show us about the types of brushes you use and you need to see the types of brushes that suitable for the painting. Other than brush, he said we could use other thing while painting the artwork as he said it is a role of painting. The painting will give more feeling for the different effect that we use.

He also show us why he mix color in wooden or why he use as pallet. It is because the wood pallet will not mixing with other color, not like the other pallet such as plastic pallet would interrupted the other color mixing. The wood is absorbent and when it dry we could use another color on it.

Painting process

Last week, we visited SUHU Art Spaces, there we were given a brief talk about what we should do before start a drawing. There our module leader told us what should do.

First, we need to images on what we want to do and to get idea from. He also told that the painter on other time conduct a research on what they want to draw. But, nowadays we just need to take picture from phone our digital camera and just edit it in some software and we will get the picture that we want.

Then, when we want to start the painting, we need to know what size of the frame we need. To make a frame that good we need a accurate measurement and angle to do it. Mostly the angle that painter use is 90 degree and the length is according to what we want.

Next, is the canvas. In painting you should have the right type of canvas to the types of your paint. it is because, each types of paint has it different specific coating or absorbent. They 3 types of canvas, oil canvas is for oil painting, absorbent canvas is for tempera and lastly, the universal canvas is good for oil painting and acrylic painting.

After the brief talk, our module lead us to the another side of the art space where, 2 students of UITM is taking part in Nando's Chicken competition in making a new signboard for Nando's. One of the student mix media to created his artworks, where he use a traditional method to created his artwork for the chicken and then created a full cartons of egg model by using 3D print machine. When we ask him why, he told that the chicken is the main part of Nando's food and the egg is important because the chicken will always layingthat egg for Nando's.

Picture 2: A full carton of eggs that he will put under the chicken drawing taken at SUHU Art Space using camera phone.

Lastly, is about his friend, he using traditional fully on his artwork. He created a chicken map that look like an old map. He told us he created this because Nando's is a food brand and restaurant, so he want to created a map that show what is the important of the food. He also explain further about his map, the map is to show the journey to happiness, because if people find food they will be happy.

Task A

Infographic

Infographic is known as information graphic are graphic visual representation  of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly and clearly.

Infographic also use to improve cognition by utilizing to enhance the human visual system's ability to see pattern and trends. 3 parts of infographic is the visual, the content and the knowledge. The visual consists of color and graphic is been divided by 2 that consists of Reference- generally icon that can be used to point certain data and Theme- included in all infographics and represent the underlying visual representation data.

Data visualization are often use in the infographic and make up the entire infographic. There are many types of visualization that can be use to represent the information. There are 5 primarily types of visualization :
1. Time series data
2. Statistical distributions
3. Maps
4. Hierarchies
5. Networking

Example of infographic:

Communicating Practise

Communicating Practise

Task C

In this task we learn about the communicating using listening skill, it is important because the art of a good communication is to be a better listener. They are 5 tips to become a better listener.
1. Paraphrase the message
2. Repeat the message
3. Probe the missing information
4. Clarify any points
5. Remember the important points

The notes that I wrote while our module leader read an article to us:

Article 1: Topic: Branding
1. Branding is a term that been use but misinterpreted, now known as the name of the company.
2. Brand is a logo and name. It also known as the face of the company.
3. Brand also intangible and known as a name to any like Coca-Cola.

Article 2: Topic: Brand and Business
1. Brand is a term to marketing and how the business process.

Task 2: Curatorial Issue

Artwork, Curator and Space

* A discussion about curatorial issue and a visit to art gallery.

On 2 April 2015, we visit Publika in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur to talk to the curator at the art gallery in Publika. We enter one of the art gallery there known as Galeri Chandan and has a small talk about with the gallery curator. She explain to us about what is curator and what we should do when we going to start the exhibitions.

For example, as a curator we can look at the spaces, lightning, the theme of the exhibition and also the size of the artworks. The curator in art gallery and in museum is different from each other because of the setting in the museum and the gallery, where museum is full with artifacts and fragile their will permanently stay there, whereas the art gallery is according to the setting and the time of the theme of the exhibition conducted.

To be a curator, it doesn't have to has certificate, it usually focus your interest and you need to always have idea in setting the spaces and where you want to show the artwork to the audiences.

When we doing the visit, I see some of the curator sometimes doesn't show the artworks properly and the artwork look hidden from the audience. For example, I told my friends about the artwork that attract me and they say they doesn't see the artwork.

The artwork that we see in Chandan Art Gallery:

Hakka Village Installation Project

Circuit Of Culture

Circuit Of Culture is a theory or framework used in the area of cultural studies. It was devised in 1997 by group of theorists when studying a village. The theory suggest that in studying a cultural text or artefact that you must look in 5 aspects:

1. Representation
2. Identity
3. Production
4. Consumption
5. Regulation

Hakka Village

Hakka was origin from China, Eastern Guangdong province. The 'hakka' chinese character literally mean 'guest families'. The Hakka ancestor are thought originates from the lands bordering the Yellow River a thousand years ago. Their mass migrations caused them to be named as 'The Jews of Asia'. Contemporary Design Issues

Blog post about a website given by module leader.
http://idnworld.com
In this website, we find many designer/artist that created new design. We looking at this website to learn about argument and how we going to talk about their design and why they created and what they inspiration to created the design and what they want to show to the audience.

So, I'm choose a designer known as Thomas Henry Burden. He is a designer that use typography as his main design and also in his artworks. The way he use the colorful and different types of font and he also use a colorful typo in his world as he say that he want to pop years theme that widely used in 80's where the bright color is a popular on that time. He also using old toys design in his artworks to recreate back the pop culture in his artworks.

Thomas Henry Burden:

One of his artworks:

Picture 2: Artwork by Thomas Henry Burden taken at http://files.idnworld.com/creators/files/v21n5/ThomasHenryBurden/16.jpg

I think his artwork is interesting because sometimes designer like sleek and clean design in their artworks and nowadays we rarely look designer using bright colors such yellow, orange, and red in one place. He also recreate back the model because he doesn't want to look real. He like to stylized his own model so that are lot quicker to create or model and have more personality.

Another artworks by Thomas Henry Burden:

REFLECTION
Designer or artist should express their artwork with their own style so that the audience can feel the vibe or understanding the artwork that they want to show to the audience. We also can use any method to presented our artwork and not only focusing in drawing to express our artworks.

Critical Awareness

Critical Awareness is also known as critical thinking or how you can be critical. Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally. It includes the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking. there are 5 skill that someone with critical thinking skills is able to follow:

1. understand the logical connections between ideas
2. identify, construct and evaluate arguments
3. detect inconsistencies and common mistakes in reasoning
4. solve problem systematically
5. reflect on the justification on one's own belief  and values

Critical thinking is quiet compatible with thinking " out of the box", challenging and pursuing your own thinking in creating something.
