MANAGING DESIGN

HISTORY OF TATTOO

Its apparent that tattooing was widely practised in many centuries in the ancient world and associated with a high level of artistic endeavour. The imagery of ancient tattooing is very similar to that modern tattooing. Throughout history tattooing like other forms of body decoration has been related to sensual, erotic and emotional of aspects of the psyche. In many cultures tattoos are traditionally associated with magic, totems and desired of the tattooed person to become identified with the spirit of animal.

BORNEO TATTOO

Borneo is one of the few places in the world where traditional tattooing is still practised today. Archaeological evidence has shown that ancestor of some contemporary native tribes have lived in Borneo for 50,000 years. The term "Dayak" is applied to a variety of native tribes including the Ibans, Kayans, and Kenyahs.

Head hunting and tattooing were intricately connected in the magic, ritual and social life of many tribes. The hand tattoos was a symbol of status in life and also served important function after death. Many of the traditional tattoo designs resembles decorative motifs founds in the art of Bali and Java and the tattooing instruments and techniques.

MANAGING DESIGN

MANAGING DESIGN

This week I need to analyse and understand the ideology of that research design that I choose. I choose qualitative designs that is case study and historical. This type of research design is to study and understand a single situation, which could be a leader, a classroom, a process, program and activity. Collect a variety of material in a specific and bounded time period. This also used for historical studies.

Historical research is the process systemically examining past event to give an account of what has happened in the past. It is not a mere accumulation of facts and dates or even descriptions of past event.

It is a flowing, dynamics account of past event which involves an interpretation of these events in an attempt to recapture the nuances, personalities and ideas that influenced this events. One of the goals as historical research is to communicate and understanding of past events.

The following five give important reasons for conducting historical research (based on Berg. 1998)

 1.   To uncover the unknown (i.e., some historical events are not recorded).
2.   To answer questions (i.e., there are many questions about our past that we not only want to know but can profit from knowing).
3.   To identify the relationship that the past has to the present (i.e., knowing about the past can frequently give a better perspective of current events).
4.   To record and evaluate the accomplishments of individuals, agencies, or institutions.
5.   To assist in understanding the culture in which we live (e.g., education is a part of our history and our culture).

MANAGING DESIGN

MANAGING DESIGN

INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH DESIGN

Research Design is to ensure that the evidence obtained enables us to effectively address the research problem logically and unambiguously as possible.

Social Science research is to obtaining information relevant to research problem generally entails to test a story, to evaluate a program, to accurately describe and asses meaning related to an observable phenomenon.

FORMS OF RESEARCH

Research is a systematic inquiry used to describe, explain, predict and control.

There 4 main forms based on specific purpose :

1.Basic research- Descriptive in nature and is used to understand and explain phenomenon
                          - often conducted for the sake of increasing and advancing a knowledge base

2. Applied research- to provide information that can be used and applied in an effort to help people to understand and control their environment
                                - more prescriptive in nature and seek to offer potential solutions to problem

3. Evaluation research- to examine the processes and outcomes associated with particular solution to a problem
                                   - may be formative-to improve solution or summative- to evaluate the effectiveness

4. Action research- often conducted within a program/organization/community(researcher are involved in gathering data and studying themselves.

There are two main approaches to a research problem- quantitative and qualitative methods,

1. Quantitative methods are used to examine the relationship between variables with the primary goal being analyse and represent that relationship mathematically through statistical analysis.

2. Qualitative methods chosen are chosen when goal of the research problem is to examine, understand and describe a phenomenon. These methods are a common choice in social science research problems and are often study ideas, belief, human behaviours and other research questions that not involve studying the relationship between variables.

MEDIA DESIGN NEW TECHNOLOGY

MEDIA DESIGN NEW TECHNOLOGY

In this modules, I need to find out what is advertising campaign and from that I need to choose the brands that I want to promote.

An advertising campaign is a series of advertisement messages that shares a single idea and theme which make up an integrated marketing communication (IMC). Advertising campaigns appears in different media channel across a specific time frame that often need to be clearly defined. Modern advertising campaign often combine multiple online and offline channels.

Advertising campaigns are developed to achieve a particular goals or a set of goals. Such goals typically include establishing a brand, raising brand awareness, increasing the rate of conversion/sales. The degree of success or failure at reaching these goals is measured with analytic tools.

I choose Maggi because Maggi is known by worldwide especially in Malaysia. In Malaysia, Maggi is a famous household food or seasoning. Maggi company is originally started in Switzerland, when Julius Maggi took over his father's mill.

In Malaysia the theme of Maggi is Happiness is Home made because nothing compares to a home-cooked meal seasoned with love and care. There are many way for me to advertise the Maggi. One is new packaging but how I can get my target audience through packaging. It also happen in website page and the Maggi Cup design. So I choose to create new product for Maggi.

GROUP DESIGN PROJECT

EXHIBITION

An exhibition in the most general sense, is an organized presentation and display of a selection of items. In practise, exhibitions usually occur within museum, galleries, and exhibition halls and world's fair. Exhibitions can include many things such as art both in major museums and smaller galleries, interpretive exhibitions, natural history museums and history museums and also varieties such as more commercially focused exhibitions and trade fairs.

The word exhibitions is usually, but not always, the word used for collections of items. Exhibitions may be permanent exhibition or temporary but in a common usage 'exhibitions' are considered temporary-usually focus scheduled to open and close on specific dates. Some exhibitions are shown in multiple location are called 'travelling exhibitions'.

MUSEUM

A museum is an institution that cares for (conserve) a collections of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical or scientific importance and makes them for public viewing through exhibit that may be permanent or temporary. Some of most attended museums include the Lourve in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the British Museum in London.

DESIGN SYSTEM AND SERVICES

TASK 1

DESIGN SYSTEM AND SERVICES

From this task we need to find the weakness or gap in system that we choose, so that we can amends or create new system from this weakness.

I choose emoticons or emoji. Why? Even though emoticons is a common system that everyone has already use to show their inner emotions and to communicate with people without talking to each other but there are still weakness in the systems where emoticon can be difficult to to interprets and they sometimes could be misunderstanding between users. My focus is in Sarawak.

Emoticons make us better communications. Human are nothing if not social. So much so that we experience significant physical and psychological problems without social interactions. Krystal D'costa of Scientific American says: " As social beings we require consistent and frequent of confirmation of our social placement. This confirmation is vital to the preservations of our network-we need to able gauge the state of our relationship with other."

Another research is made by researchers at Tokyo Denki University, Japan founds that the more graphic the emoticon, the more our brain responds to it. As the emoticon becomes less abstract(or more human like) the brain responds accordingly.

Picture 1: Effect of using graphic emoticons in human brains by researchers at Tokyo Denki University. Taken at: https://dq9ucdqjq6nrk.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Yausa.jpg.

More graphics is the emoticon cause our brain to activate the temporal gyrus which is responsible for recalling biological motions. Humans understands emoticons to be emotional communications, which results of the activation of the right frontal gyrus as seen above.

There another weakness also in this system where elder couldn't communicate with the youngster because in Sarawak most elder couldn't read and with the advance technology that happen in our world they will be left out without modernization. Using emoticon would help them to communicate with the younger generation using symbol because it using images.

My ideas is to create a new emoji using Iban language and Iban motif because it is my language and I want to create something that help my ethnics to communicate with each other more and others races also can learn different language using this emoji.

INTRODUCTION

Industrial training is refers to work experience that is relevant to professional development prior to graduations.
My industrial training start on 30th November 2015 and end on 6th February 2016 at 75 Celebrations company. It is a small company that doing decorations and planning an events that the clients decided. Sometimes, the company also designs some banner, backdrop and some favors like designing calendar or diary according to the clients wants.
I choose this company because I want to have experiences in working in the graphic design industries and interacts in clients in this industries.
Usually I would design small things like props and backdrops and hampers deco. Sometimes I my superior bring me to the site or the event place to help them to deco, usually this is for the big event like weddings. The clients that I would works with will thoroughly from my superior. Because the company is small and they only take one intern so mostly I work alone there with my superior.

TRAINING WORKS

My training works also start on my first day of internship. Where I was given a job on creating membership card for a beauty facial salon. The salon name is Born Beautiful Beauty Centre.
When I received this assignment, I was a little bit confuse because my superior just give the envelope of how to be a member of some certain Bank. Then I understand what she want me to do and I check the client website and founded that they theme is purple. So I created they card like this. Then they want the card with Christmas theme cards to be given to the member of their beauty centre.

CONCLUSION
From this industrial training, I learn that I need to done anything and finish it on time or before the event start. I also learn how to handle clients that has too many requests and a little bit confuse on what they want from my superior and also to avoid printing wastage and costs when doing some projects.
I also learns about time management in doing some projects and how to communicate with clients and also to give my opinions on something without any push over.

REFLECTIONS
From my industrial training, I learn that I should have the confident in making my own decision on what I'm going to do. I also about the time management and to finish the job on the dateline given. I also about handling a clients and communication between a designer and their clients about their own decision.
